This past Friday and the beginning of this week we studied Presidents Day and Presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.  The date in February for Presidents Day is chosen because of the dates of Lincoln and Washington’s birthdays.  We compared and contrasted the lives of our first and sixteenth presidents.  An interesting addition to the discussion was the comparison between Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr.  Each worked toward equality and unity in the United States.  Lincoln and MLK were each assassinated, as well.  I would invite students to add any more things you learned in our study of Presidents Day.  Referring to our Lincoln and Washington Venn Diagram might be helpful. 

Today our Pre-GED class will complete their first newsletter.  The process has gone pretty well.  Each student contributed a different article or feature.  I look forward to seeing this grow and evidence the students’ growth.  I would invite the students to post their comments about the process and the finished product.  

Below are five sentences that need to be ordered again. I must have a problem with my paragraphs, right? Please cut and paste each sentence into the correct order. This time only one order is correct. Think about clue words that will help you determine the topic sentence, the three supporting details, and the conclusion.

Second, the car would help the environment because my car would pollute less than normal cars.

First, the new car would save money because water is cheaper than gasoline.

If I could invent something I would make a car that uses water as fuel because water is less expensive than gasoline, water pollutes less than gasoline, and the car would make me famous.

In conclusion, I would invent a car that drives on water to help drivers, help the environment and make me famous.

Third, if I invented this car, I would be popular.

They do not need a lot of space.

Your nosey neighbors won’t even know you have a pet.

The best pet is a guinea pig.

You can have a guinea pig even if you live in an apartment.

Also, guinea pigs are not noisy.

All these reasons are why guinea pigs are the best pets.

Guinea pigs do not eat a lot, so they are not expensive.

The sentences above are part of a paragraph. Which sentence is the topic sentence? Which are the supporting details? And which is the conclusion? Copy and paste each sentence into your response. Then copy the sentences into a paragraph form, deciding which order you think sounds best.

Below is an example paragraph describing my favorite food.

My favorite food is shrimp because they remind me of the ocean, they remind me of my family and they are delicious. Shrimp remind me of visiting the ocean. I love to visit the beach and then go out to eat at a good seafood restaurant. Shrimp also remind me of my family. My mom and sister love to eat shrimp. Lastly, shrimp are delicious. They can be used in many different types of food and add a unique flavor. In conclusion, scrumptious shrimp are my favorite food.
